Family Home Refurbishment

We were employed to work alongside the architect on the redesign of this five-bedroom detached house. We were briefed to create a well-designed yet functional family home. Light, colour and originality were key for the fun-loving family, but with young children the home had to be practical: that meant washable loose covers in bright colours for the dining chairs; durable, wipe-clean fabrics for the sofas, and colourful, functional joinery. In designing the downstairs cloakroom, we re-used quirky vintage tiles from an old fireplace. Horton won the ‘Entertaining Space of the Year’ category at the 2014 Northern Design Awards for our Music Room design on this project.

    [content] => The brief was for a design-led, fun, contemporary home for the client’s young family. The client, herself the architect, had a clear vision for the design of the building but wanted guidance and a creative lead from Horton on the interiors.

A strong use of colour throughout balanced the strong materials we helped the client choose - including walnut joinery, polished concrete flooring and feature sandstone walls.

We developed a design concept around ‘one-off’ bespoke pieces of furniture from contemporary designers.

Each room was finished with new and antique feature accessories to add unusual accents to the space, with complementary artwork and lighting. The result was a fun, cohesive scheme for a creative family.

    [content] => We were commissioned by a well-travelled client from England who loved colour and fun to refurbish a luxury safari lodge in Tanzania. We chose a ‘Mexico meets Morocco in the Bush’-theme for the space, with the client’s personality reflected in the interiors.

Part of the challenge was to specify furnishings that would withstand the perils of the African environment including exposure to extreme weather conditions and all manner of wildlife!

The bandas (bedrooms) were designed to blend the feeling of an English country house with the vibrancy of Africa; hence the authentic Zanzibar day beds in vivid colours sitting next to a traditional master bed with crisp white bedding, chintzy cushions and a romantic mosquito net.

Antiques from England were imported, including a billiard table, travel chests and family photographs creating the feeling of a 'home away from home'.
